A thymoma is a kind of tumor or growth in the thymus gland. Thymoma and thymic carcinoma are disorders in which malignant cancer cells develop on the thymus’s external surface. Stages

Stage I

Stage II

In stage II, cancer has spread via the capsule and into the fat around the thymus or into the coating of the chest cavity.

Stage III

In stage III, cancer has spread to neighboring organs in the chest, including the lung, the sac around the heart or large blood vessels that transport blood to heart.

Stage IV

Stage IV is separated into stage IVA and stage IVB, contingent on where the cancer has spread.

  • In stage IVA, cancer has spread extensively around the lungs or heart.
  • In stage IVB, cancer has reached the blood or lymph system.

Diagnosis

Examinations that study the thymus are used to detect thymoma or thymic carcinoma. An x-ray is taken of the organs and bones inside the chest. CT scan and MRI are also used to make a series of comprehensive pictures of zones inside the body like the chest taken from diverse angles. PET scan (positron emission tomography scan) is used to find malignant cancer cells in the body. A biopsy of the cancer is done to detect the disease.

Treatment

Surgery is the chief treatment for thymoma. If all evidence of ailment is inept to be removed and microscopic or cancer remains after surgery, then radiation therapy, chemotherapy and targeted therapy medications have been used along with surgical resection.
